President Bola Tinubu has approved the upgrade of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, to the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology, Nasarawa, in a move aimed at strengthening technical education and unlocking Nigeria’s solid minerals potential.
The approval, announced in a statement on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, aligns with the administration’s commitment to developing skilled manpower for the nation’s industrialisation and economic diversification.
According to the statement, the approval followed a proposal by Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu, representing Nasarawa West Senatorial District, who advocated the establishment of a specialised institution to leverage Nasarawa State’s rich solid mineral resources.
The Presidency said the new university would provide world-class education, research and innovation in mining, engineering, mineral processing, metallurgy, manufacturing and emerging technologies.
It added that the institution is expected to produce the skilled workforce needed to drive value addition, technological advancement and the sustainable exploitation of Nigeria’s mineral resources.
President Tinubu also directed the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission and other relevant agencies to begin the processes required to implement the conversion in line with existing laws and regulations.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in education as a strategic tool for economic growth, innovation, job creation and national prosperity under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
