The United States said its military has struck several targets in Iran in response to recent attacks by Tehran on several vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
“US Central Command forces have begun launching a series of powerful strikes against Iran to impose heavy costs for targeting and attacking commercial shipping crewed by innocent civilians in an international waterway,” CENTCOMsaidin a social media post late on July 7.
“Irans demonstrated aggression was unwarranted, dangerous, and a clear violation of the cease-fire.”

Iranian media reported several explosions in the port city of Sirik. The Mehr media outlet also noted blasts in Qeshm and Bandar Abbas.
Earlier in the day, three ships transiting in the Strait of Hormuz were said to have come under fire in attacks attributed to Iran.
The outbreak of strikes sharply escalates the confrontation between Tehran and Washington amid a shaky cease-fire as the two sides hold talks aimed at a peace deal to to end the Middle East war.
The strikes came shortly after Washington announced it had revoked a temporary sanctions waiver for the sale of Iranian oil, ratcheting up pressure on Iran during the peace talks.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the move, saying it breached a memorandum of understanding that was signed by Tehran and Washington last month.
The interim deal provides for waiving US oil sanctions on Iran, while tying the end of wider sanctions and the release of frozen Iranian assets to Tehran’s implementation of commitments, such as “down-blending” its stocks of highly enriched uranium under international supervision.
The strikes also come as leaders from the NATO military alliance hold a summit in Turkey where the conflict with Iran is being discussed.
