Panic erupted in Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Sunday night after a student hostel collapsed, leaving an unspecified number of occupants feared trapped beneath the debris.
According to eyewitnesses, a loud bang was heard moments before the multi-storey building caved in, prompting students and residents to rush to the scene in a desperate bid to rescue those trapped.
“We heard a loud bang, and within seconds people were screaming for help. Everyone rushed out to see what had happened,” an eyewitness recounted.

Videos and photographs circulating on social media showed scores of residents, students and emergency responders at the scene carrying out rescue operations.
Local volunteers were also seen helping to clear the rubble in search of survivors.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had not confirmed the number of people trapped, injured or killed in the collapse.
