Nollywood actor Ugo Nwokolo has sparked discussions online following his remarks about internet fraud, popularly referred to as Yahoo, and its perceived impact on Nigeria’s economy.
The actor shared his views during a video conversation where he addressed the growing economic difficulties faced by many Nigerians, particularly workers struggling with the rising cost of living.
Nwokolo expressed concern over how civil servants and low-income earners manage basic needs amid increasing expenses. He questioned how individuals earning between N50,000 and N90,000 monthly could comfortably afford accommodation in major cities such as Abuja and Lagos.
Highlighting the high cost of housing, the actor noted that many apartments in these cities now require annual rent payments running into millions of naira.
“Do you expect a civil servant to afford house rent of N3 million or N5 million in Abuja?” he asked.
He suggested that many people who can afford such expensive lifestyles are often those with access to significant financial resources, including individuals involved in internet fraud.
Nwokolo further stated that, despite the criminal nature of Yahoo activities, the money generated by some fraudsters often circulates within the economy through spending and investments.
“Personally, I think Yahoo has helped keep the economy afloat,” he said.
However, the actor clarified that his statement should not be interpreted as support or encouragement for illegal activities. He explained that his comments were aimed at drawing attention to the difficult economic conditions many Nigerians currently face and the pressures that push people into desperate situations.
