6 Nigerians on Sharing Expenses With Their Exes After They Broke Up

Sometimes, being in a relationship means having someone to share expenses with. But when the relationship ends, those arrangements can end too.
For these Nigerians, though, that’s far from their realities. They get honest about why they’ve maintained financial relationships with former lovers.
I have three exes I still share subscriptions with. Ex 1 and I share Netflix, Ex 2 and I have a shared savings account , while Ex 3 and I split YouTube and Google One subscriptions. We’ve been broken up for three years, four years and one year respectively.
I see these arrangements as my right as much as theirs, so I’m never leaving. I’m strict about boundaries, but since they still want some access to me, this is one way they can have it. I’d say the arrangements are a win-win for everyone, so I don’t see them ending anytime soon.
My ex and I broke up last year, but I’ve taken care of him since then. We dated for about five months before his business suffered a major loss and left him with nothing. Since then, I’ve covered his expenses, from feeding to literally anything else he needs.
Our genotypes were a reason we couldn’t continue the relationship, and I feel responsible for him. We’re cool, but there’s no sexual relationship between us. However, I feel like he’s gotten too comfortable. I’m not mentally ready for a fresh relationship, but I know I can’t keep taking care of him forever. I’ll end our arrangement soon.
I left my ex two and a half years ago, but we continued splitting the feeding expenses for another year. He’d send money for groceries, and I’d cook for us. It worked because we lived beside each other. I saved money while his lazy ass got fed, so it was mutually beneficial.
Over time, we grew closer again and started having sleepovers. But we fought a lot, too. Once, he yelled at me because I got home late and was too tired to cook, so I asked him to make noodles. We eventually ended things after I moved cities, and I like to think I handled the situation well.
My ex and I broke up over a year ago, but we still share rent and utilities. We don’t live together, but he covers more than half of my rent while I handle utility bills and groceries.
He suggested the arrangement because he still thinks of me as his baby, and he visits occasionally. We also communicate about once or twice a month, which I usually initiate because of our arrangement.
I dated someone else briefly, but neither of them minded. I hope to end this soon because I think it’s now an excuse for sex whenever he comes.
I ended a relationship three years ago, but my ex is still on my Apple family plan. I didn’t want to kick him out before he backed up his stuff, so he tried to get me to come over to help. I saw through it and told him he could stay if he contributed.
I mentioned a ridiculously high amount, hoping he’d leave, but he accepted. After his friend told him the actual cost of the plan, he stopped sending his share for three months and accused me of cheating him. I reminded him he was free to leave, then he paid his arrears and stopped complaining.
He covers about 90% of the bill, so I’ll keep it going for now..
My ex paid my MBA fees every month in dollars. I started the programme in March 2023, and even after we broke up in December that year, he kept paying until April 2026. I still don’t know why he did it. Maybe he’s just a man of his word, or he’s just a good man, I’ll never know. At some point, I started feeling uncomfortable, and I shared my concerns, but he continued making the payments anyway.
The funniest part is that we barely spoke while he was paying my fees. We’re still cordial now, but that’s about it. I’ve completed the programme now, so the arrangement has ended.
