Asiedu Nketia Dismisses Claims of Mahama Third-Term Bid, Accuses NPP of Using It as Campaign Message
National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Asiedu Nketia, popularly known as General Mosquito, has dismissed reports suggesting that President John Mahama is preparing to seek a third term in office.
Speaking in an interview with Ambassador TV, Asiedu Nketia said there was no truth to claims that plans were underway for the President to pursue another term beyond the constitutional limit.
According to him, President Mahama has repeatedly made his position on the matter clear, but the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is allegedly attempting to turn the issue into a campaign message.
Asiedu Nketia expressed surprise that some members of the opposition would attribute the government’s economic performance to an alleged plan by Mahama to seek a third term.
“Now, when you speak for the third-term bid, you are someone who loves Mahama, but when you speak against the third-term bid, you dislike Mahama. What they are doing is very dangerous,” he said.
He maintained that Mahama himself had stated that he was not interested in seeking a third term, despite claims and discussions surrounding the issue.
“President Mahama himself has said he is not interested, but someone has also taken the issue to court to force him to contest for a third term,” he added.
The NDC chairman also expressed concern over calls from some religious leaders and other individuals urging the President to seek another term.
“Even pastors are also involved in these calls for a third term. Some even say that if I contest, I will win,” he said.
Asiedu Nketia further warned against attempts to pressure Mahama into contesting beyond his declared intentions, arguing that such discussions could create unnecessary divisions within the NDC.
He said the situation could potentially influence the President’s position on who should succeed him, urging political actors to refrain from encouraging what he described as unnecessary third-term discussions.
