The Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressives’ Union (BEPU) has called on the Kaduna State Government to immediately halt the alleged disposal of public assets in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area, establish a Judicial Commission of Inquiry, recover any public property found to have been unlawfully transferred, and prosecute all individuals implicated in any wrongdoing.
The demand was contained in a communiqué issued on Saturday at the end of an emergency congress of the union jointly signed by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Professor Lawal Khalid; the Chairman of the Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressives’ Union (BEPU), Dr. Isah Muhammad; and the Secretary-General of the union, Engineer Muhammad Jamil Abdulhamid.
The congress expressed concern over reports that strategic public institutions and government lands, established with public funds for the benefit of residents, had allegedly been transferred into private hands under questionable circumstances.
According to the communiqué, the union alleged that some individuals, working in collaboration with certain public officials, procured approvals and other documents used to facilitate the transfer of public assets into private ownership without the knowledge or consent of the people of Birnin Gwari.
BEPU maintained that public institutions are held in trust by government for the people and should not be converted to private ownership through processes that undermine transparency, accountability and the rule of law.
The congress identified public assets reportedly affected to include the Birnin Gwari Public Library, Jibril Mai Gwari I Memorial Hospital, the stadium, Sports Council facilities, Police Quarters, Veterinary Clinic, Fire Service lands, Government Staff Quarters, … Office and other strategic public properties.
Among its resolutions, the union called on Governor Uba Sani to constitute an independent Judicial Commission of Inquiry headed by a serving or retired judge to investigate all transactions relating to public assets in Birnin Gwari and recommend appropriate legal action where violations are established.
The union also demanded the immediate suspension of all ongoing transactions involving strategic public institutions and government lands pending the outcome of an independent investigation.
BEPU further urged the Kaduna State Government to recover and restore any public institution or government land found to have been unlawfully alienated, publish all documents relating to the transactions, undertake a comprehensive inventory of public assets, and rehabilitate neglected public institutions across the emirate.
The congress also called on the Kaduna State House of Assembly to conduct a public hearing into the management and disposal of public assets in Birnin Gwari, while urging anti-corruption agencies, including the ICPC and EFCC, to investigate and prosecute anyone found culpable.
While stressing that its position was not politically motivated, the union said its intervention was aimed at promoting transparency, accountability and responsible governance.
BEPU urged residents of Birnin Gwari to remain peaceful and law-abiding while supporting lawful efforts to safeguard public institutions and preserve the emirate’s collective heritage.
