Dameisha Beach in Shenzhen, China, has become famous for something unusual: its massive crowds.
The public beach stretches for about 1.8 kilometres and can become packed with tens of thousands of visitors during weekends and the busy summer months.
Photos and videos showing huge crowds covering almost every available space on the beach regularly attract attention online.
Some visitors have complained on travel platforms such as TripAdvisor about the overcrowding, with some claiming it was difficult to even reach the water because of the number of people.
Dameisha is a public beach and is free to access. However, authorities in Shenzhen have introduced measures to control the crowds.
From May to October, the number of visitors allowed to enter the beach each day is reportedly limited to 80,000.
Visitors are required to make reservations before arriving to ensure they can enter on their chosen day.
Although 80,000 visitors may already sound like a huge number, Dameisha has reportedly experienced much larger crowds in the past.
On some occasions, as many as 200,000 people have reportedly gathered at the beach at the same time.
With such large crowds, simply moving around the beach can become difficult, while finding enough space to relax or swim can be challenging.
One reason for Dameisha’s popularity is how easy it is to reach.
Several bus routes serve the area, while a metro station is located directly in front of the beach.
Easy public transportation combined with free entry has made the destination popular among Shenzhen residents and tourists.
Despite complaints about overcrowding, Dameisha Beach continues to attract huge numbers of visitors during summer.
Images showing thousands of people packed along the shoreline have also helped turn the beach into a viral attraction online.
