Delta cancels Lagos-Atlanta flight twice, strands passengers

Passengers on Delta Air Lines’ Lagos-Atlanta service have been left stranded after the carrier cancelled the same flight twice within three days and cited separate operational problems that disrupted their travel plans and forced some travellers to make fresh hotel arrangements.

The affected service, DL9895, was scheduled to leave the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Sunday, August 23, 2026.

Passengers were initially told that the flight had been cancelled because of a mechanical problem discovered during pre-departure safety checks. They were subsequently informed that the service would be rescheduled after maintenance work on the aircraft.

However, the disruption persisted.

On Tuesday, August 25, passengers preparing for the rescheduled journey received another cancellation notice from the airline. This time, Delta attributed the disruption to “crew availability constraints”.

The airline’s notification to affected travellers read: “We are sorry. Your flight DL9895 from Lagos (LOS) – Atlanta (ATL) was cancelled due to an issue that limited crew availability.”

The back-to-back cancellations left passengers facing uncertainty over when they would finally depart Lagos. Some travellers returned to hotels, while others were at the airport terminal awaiting further arrangements, according to findings by New Daily Prime.

The disruption also created the prospect of additional expenses for passengers, particularly those who had to extend hotel stays or adjust onward travel plans from Atlanta.

Atlanta serves as a major connecting point for passengers travelling to several destinations across the United States. A missed arrival can therefore affect connecting flights, accommodation, and other travel arrangements.

Passenger-protection rules generally require airlines to provide appropriate assistance where travellers are stranded overnight because of qualifying operational disruptions. Depending on the circumstances, affected customers may also be entitled to rerouting on the next available service or a refund under applicable conditions.

Delta’s Station Manager for Nigeria, Salami Omeiza, acknowledged the disruption and said the airline was working to assist affected passengers.

Omeiza said, “Delta regrets the inconvenience this disruption has caused and appreciates the patience and understanding of our customers. The safety and well-being of our customers and crew remain our highest priority.”

He explained that the August 23 service was cancelled for operational reasons, while the subsequent flight was affected by a maintenance issue that delayed its departure.

He said, “Delta flight DL55 on August 23 was cancelled due to operational reasons, while the flight on August 25 departed behind schedule as technicians resolved a maintenance issue with the aircraft,” he said.

Omeiza added that Delta’s teams were working to re-accommodate passengers on available flights and provide necessary support.

“We are providing affected customers with the necessary support and will share further updates as they become available,” he said.

The repeated disruption has consequently turned what was expected to be a routine Lagos-Atlanta journey into a multi-day ordeal for the affected travellers.
