There is excitement among National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Ebonyi State following the approval of a ₦30,000 monthly state allowance for every corps member serving in the state.
The allowance was approved by Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, as part of his administration’s efforts to improve the welfare and support available to young Nigerians undertaking the mandatory national service.
Governor Nwifuru announced the initiative on Friday during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream II corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Afikpo.
The governor, who was represented at the ceremony by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Chidiebere Onyia, welcomed the newly deployed corps members to Ebonyi and assured them of the state government’s support throughout their service year.
Onyia described Ebonyi as a peaceful and welcoming state with opportunities for young people. He encouraged the corps members to see their service year as an opportunity to develop new skills, interact with people from different backgrounds and contribute to the development of their host communities.
He also urged them to take their primary assignments seriously while maintaining discipline, integrity, hard work and respect for constituted authorities.
The governor’s representative reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to the growth, welfare and safety of corps members serving across the state.
NYSC Requests Camp Improvements
While welcoming the new allowance, the NYSC State Coordinator, Malgwi Pat Maidariya, appealed to the Ebonyi State Government to further improve facilities at the permanent orientation camp in Afikpo.
Maidariya called for the modernisation of the camp’s central kitchen and the construction of a standard dining facility.
She also requested the establishment of a fully equipped Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) Centre, renovation of the camp’s perimeter fence and improvements to the multipurpose hall.
According to the NYSC coordinator, better facilities would further improve the experience and welfare of corps members during their orientation programme.
She commended the Ebonyi government for its continued partnership with the NYSC and support for youth development.
Maidariya also charged the corps members to participate actively in camp activities and uphold the core NYSC values of patriotism, integrity, discipline and selfless service.
The swearing-in ceremony featured the administration and signing of the oath of allegiance by the newly deployed corps members. It also included tactical displays by the Man ‘O’ War unit and an inspection of projects and facilities within the orientation camp.
The latest intervention adds Ebonyi to the growing list of Nigerian states providing additional financial support to corps members on top of the Federal Government’s NYSC allowance.
The move is expected to ease some of the financial pressures faced by corps members during their service year while encouraging them to contribute more effectively to communities where they are posted.
With the new ₦30,000 monthly state stipend, corps members serving in Ebonyi are set to receive additional financial support throughout their period of national service.
