By Jabiru Hassan
The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in Gombe State, Dr. Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, requesting an investigation into an alleged online campaign of cyberbullying, criminal defamation and misinformation targeting him.
Sources familiar with the petition said Gwamna asked the Nigeria Police National Cybercrime Centre to investigate the matter, with support from INTERPOL, following intelligence that some of the individuals behind the online posts may be operating outside Nigeria.
According to the sources, the petition alleges that several social media accounts published false claims that the APC aspirant had been arrested and detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Gwamna denied the claims and described them as part of a coordinated effort to damage his reputation.
The petition reportedly requests that investigators obtain subscriber information, IP logs and other digital evidence from Meta Platforms to identify those responsible, prosecute anyone found culpable under the law and facilitate the removal of the disputed content.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force and the EFCC had not issued public statements on the petition or the allegations contained in it.The allegations in the petition remain subject to investigation, and no findings have been announced by the authorities.
