A Non-Governmental Organisation, Broad Focus for Community Development, has marked its first anniversary with a one-day skill acquisition training for 30 youths in Osogbo, Osun State capital.
The training, held ahead of the NGO’s anniversary tomorrow, August 27, targeted participants between the ages of 12 and 21.
The beneficiaries were taken through practical sessions in baking, beading, and crochet as part of efforts to boost self-reliance and reduce unemployment among young people.
Speaking with journalists, the organisation’s Team Lead of the organisation, Mr Vincent Enike, said the programme was designed to give back to the community that has supported the NGO since its inception one year ago.
Enike said, “We believe that skills are the fastest way to empower young people. On the occasion of our first anniversary, we decided to invest in 30 young minds with tools they can use to create wealth for themselves.
“We do not want our youths to depend solely on white-collar jobs. If they can learn a skill today, they can start a business tomorrow and become employers of labour.
“That is why we are committed to expanding this programme to other communities and partnering with stakeholders to provide starter packs for the most outstanding participants.”
Two of the beneficiaries – Michael Daniel (15) and Doyinsola Olojede (15), in their separate remarks, described the training as life-changing and expressed appreciation to the organisation for the opportunity.

“The facilitators taught us step by step how to make small chops and cakes. Now I can do it on my own. This will help me earn money and support my family. I’m very grateful to Broad Focus for giving us this opportunity,” Daniel stated.
Olojede, who joined the crochet class, said, “I have learnt how to make crochet bags. Before now, I only watched videos online, but today I did it myself. I am so happy. Broad Focus has really improved my knowledge. I promise to practice what I learnt and teach others too.”
All 30 participants received certificates of participation at the end of the training.
The organisation said it will continue to run programmes focused on youth empowerment, women’s development, and community health as it begins its second year.
