“I Had Only Two Pairs Of Jeans And Ate Once A Day”- Frank Edwards Recalls Humble Beginnings

Renowned gospel musician Frank Edwards has opened up about the humble beginnings of his music career, recalling how he recorded one of his biggest songs while living as a squatter and using a blanket as a makeshift recording booth.

The singer shared the story during a recent church ministration, where he reflected on the difficult circumstances he faced before achieving success in the music industry.

Frank revealed that in 2011, his mother gave him ₦150,000 to start a small recording studio. He used the money to set up a basic studio in a corner of the room where he was staying with another person.

Because the house was situated close to a busy roadside and lacked a proper vocal booth, Frank improvised by covering himself and the microphone with a blanket to minimise the noise from outside while recording his song, “Mma Mma.”

“I recorded ‘Mma Mma’ under a blanket because we lived close to the roadside. I had only two pairs of jeans and ate once a day, but God still lifted me,” he said.

According to the gospel singer, his breakthrough began when music marketer Honesty Music visited his modest studio. Although the marketer was initially unimpressed by the appearance of the recording space, he was reportedly blown away by the quality of the music Frank had produced.

Frank said Honesty Music subsequently offered him a ₦4 million recording deal, which he accepted almost immediately without going through the terms of the agreement.

“I just flipped the paper, saw where they wrote ₦4 million and signed it. No need to read it. Make I chop first,” he added.

The singer explained that the deal marked an important turning point in his life. The money enabled him to move into a better apartment and establish a proper studio.

He later connected with renowned music producer Don Moen, a relationship Frank said played a significant role in shaping his career and opening the door to greater opportunities.

His story serves as a reminder of how far determination, faith and perseverance can take someone, even when their beginnings appear modest.
