Troops of Operation UDO KA have recovered and exhumed the remains of Chief Ibe Anyadu of Aggah Community from a shallow grave in Umudike Forest, Imo State, after a suspect arrested over violent crimes led security personnel to the burial site during interrogation.
Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni made the announcement via X on Monday. The operation, carried out on 2 August under Operation EASTERN SANITY II, gave the deceased’s family the opportunity to prepare a burial in line with their customs and followed earlier arrests connected with the killing of a Nigerian Army soldier and the recovery of stolen service weapons.

The recovery followed intelligence led operations by troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade under Operation UDO KA. Investigators questioned suspects arrested over violent crimes in the area, and one of them admitted taking part in the killing of the community leader before leading troops to the burial site.
The discovery also forms part of ongoing security operations aimed at identifying criminal camps and prosecuting people connected with violent offences in the South East.
Suspect leads troops to burial site
The Army said Chief Anyadu was allegedly murdered by members of a criminal gang whose suspects were recently arrested during security operations in the region.
During questioning, one suspect confessed to taking part in the murder and volunteered to guide troops to the location where the victim had been buried.
On 2 August, the suspect led troops into Umudike Forest, identified as one of the criminal group’s camps, where the shallow grave was located. Security personnel then exhumed the remains of the late community leader.
Family members of the deceased witnessed the exercise alongside vigilante personnel from Ohaji Egbema Local Government Area and representatives of the Aggah and Umudike communities.
The family provided a coffin and an ambulance so the remains could be taken away for burial in line with their customs and traditions.
Army promises legal action
The Commander of Joint Task Force South East, Operation UDO KA, Major General Oluremi Ayobami Fadairo, sympathised with the family of Chief Anyadu and prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul.
He assured the family and residents of Aggah Community that those arrested in connection with the case would face prosecution under the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The Army said the recovery of the remains formed part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating in the South East and ensure that people responsible for violent crimes face lawful prosecution.
It also stated that lawful procedures would continue to provide victims and their families with closure.
The Headquarters of Operation UDO KA appealed to members of the public to continue giving security agencies timely and credible information, noting that such cooperation is important to ongoing operations agains t criminal groups in the region.
