The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that the publication of its presidential ticket by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has effectively resolved months of uncertainty over the party’s participation in the 2027 presidential election.
The faction said the inclusion of Senator Sandy Onor and his running mate, Babangida Umar, on INEC’s published list of presidential candidates amounted to official recognition of its nomination process and dispelled claims that the party would be unable to field a candidate.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, the faction described the development as a decisive moment in the prolonged internal struggle that has divided the opposition party ahead of the 2027 polls.

Mohammed noted that the publication by INEC had invalidated months of speculation that the PDP’s internal crisis would prevent it from presenting a presidential candidate within the statutory deadline.
Mohammed said, “This development has effectively laid to rest the sustained misinformation and propaganda by those who desperately sought to convince Nigerians that the PDP would not field a presidential candidate.”
He added that the appearance of the names of Onor and Umar on the electoral commission’s list reflected the triumph of due process and the rule of law.
The announcement followed INEC’s publication of the final list of presidential and National Assembly candidates for the 2027 general election, a process that has become a crucial test of legitimacy for political parties battling internal disputes.
For months, the PDP has experienced sharp division over its national leadership and control of the party’s structures. The crisis has produced parallel meetings, conflicting decisions, and several court cases, fuelling uncertainty over which faction would eventually secure recognition from the electoral commission.
Against that backdrop, the Wike-backed group interpreted INEC’s publication as confirmation that its nomination process had met the legal requirements for the election.
The faction also expressed appreciation to party members and supporters across Nigeria and in the diaspora for remaining loyal during a difficult period.
It further commended INEC, the judiciary and security agencies for what it called their commitment to constitutional order throughout the process.
Mohammed appealed to aggrieved members to return to the party. He maintained that reconciliation is necessary if the PDP hopes to regain political relevance ahead of the general election.
He also welcomed recent defectors and returning members, saying their decision reflected renewed confidence in the party’s leadership.
The publication, however, is unlikely to end the political contest within the opposition.
Another PDP faction associated with former Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, Tanimu Turaki, had earlier maintained that former President Goodluck Jonathan emerged as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
That group had claimed it manually submitted its presidential nomination to INEC after allegedly failing to obtain the access code required for electronic submission.
The conflicting claims underscore the wider leadership crisis that has plagued the PDP since the last general election, which has left rival blocs to seek political and legal legitimacy through separate structures.
While the Wike-backed faction views INEC’s latest publication as a significant victory, the broader dispute over the party’s leadership is still unresolved. While the recognition of candidates may strengthen one bloc’s position ahead of the election, it may not necessarily extinguish legal or political disagreements within the party.
For now, the publication of Onor’s name by INEC provides the clearest indication yet of which presidential ticket the commission intends to recognise for the 2027 election, even as the PDP continues its struggle to rebuild unity after months of internal division.
