Iran on Monday executed two men convicted of spying for Israel and providing information on sensitive military and security facilities to Israeli intelligence, the country’s judiciary said.
The executions are the latest in a growing number of hangings carried out by Tehran since the outbreak of its war with Israel and the United States in February, with several convicts accused of working with Israeli intelligence.
According to Mizan, the judiciary’s media outlet, Omid Behzad and Pouria Safvat were hanged after being convicted of “espionage and collaboration with the Zionist regime”.
“Omid Behzad and Pouria Safvat were hanged this morning for transmitting the coordinates of sensitive military and security sites to Mossad agents,” Mizan reported, referring to Israel’s foreign intelligence service.
The judiciary did not disclose when the two men were arrested or tried but said they had provided information on military and security centres during the war to assist Israeli intelligence operations.
“They helped the intelligence services achieve their objectives by providing them with information on military and security centres during the war,” Mizan said.
The latest executions come amid an increase in capital punishment in Iran following the war, which began on February 28 with extensive US-Israeli strikes that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader.
Rights organisations have described Iran as the world’s second-largest executioner after China.
Iran Human Rights, a Norway-based non-governmental organisation, and the Paris-based Together Against the Death Penalty (ECPM) said Iranian authorities executed at least 1,639 people in 2025, the highest figure recorded in the country since 1989.
Amnesty International on Tuesday condemned what it described as an “escalation” in executions after Iranian authorities announced the hanging of two men convicted over their alleged involvement in anti-government protests during the winter.
