Senator Rufai Sani Hanga, the lawmaker representing Kano Central Senatorial District has resigned his membership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), ending weeks of defection speculation.
Hanga formally communicated his decision in a resignation letter dated August 3, 2026, addressed to the Chairman of the NDC in Dakata Ward, Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The senator said his resignation takes immediate effect and followed what he described as careful reflection and personal deliberation.
In the letter, Hanga explained that he was leaving the party to pursue other personal commitments and career paths.
He expressed appreciation to the ward leadership, executive committee and members of the NDC for the support, opportunities and camaraderie he enjoyed during his time in the party.
The lawmaker also requested that his name be removed from the party’s membership register and confirmed that he had returned his official NDC membership card.
Hanga wished the party and its members success in their future endeavours.
LEADERSHIP reports the resignation comes after weeks of intense speculation about the senator’s political future, fueled by a series of meetings he recently held with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other prominent figures within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), including the party’s National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda.
Although Hanga did not disclose his next political destination in the resignation letter, political observers believe his exit from the NDC could pave the way for a defection to the APC.
