The Kogi State Government has inaugurated 530 newly trained Forest Guards to support security agencies in tackling insecurity and protecting rural communities across the state.
Speaking at the passing-out parade held at the Muhammadu Buhari Civic Centre in Lokoja, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, represented by Deputy Governor Elder Joel Salifu Oyibo, said the initiative is aimed at securing farmlands, safeguarding lives and property, and restoring public confidence in vulnerable communities.
The governor described the establishment of the Forest Guards as a strategic investment in community security. He said although the Federal Government approved 539 Forest Guards for Kogi State, 530 successfully completed training and are ready for deployment. He urged the new personnel to uphold professionalism, respect traditional institutions and protect residents from criminal activities.
Also speaking at the event, the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, described the passing-out parade as a significant milestone in efforts to strengthen grassroots security. He commended the Kogi State Government and security agencies for the initiative and said the guards’ salaries and allowances would commence immediately. Ribadu said the training covered discipline, professionalism, forest preservation, drone surveillance and GPS-based tracking to enhance operational effectiveness.
Speaking on behalf of the graduating guards, Olufemi Okeowo expressed appreciation to the state government, traditional rulers and local government chairmen for supporting the programme.
