The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has announced the release of the Nigerian girls who were detained in Mauritius, confirming that they are currently on their way back to Nigeria after diplomatic efforts involving Nigerian authorities.
A statement issued on Monday by the Commission’s Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, disclosed that the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, maintained constant engagement with the Nigerian Embassy, which officially intervened with the Mauritian authorities to facilitate the girls’ release and ensure due process.
According to the statement, the girls were released safely in Nairobi and have commenced their journey back to Nigeria.
Reacting to the development, Dabiri-Erewa expressed concern for the young women and said she looks forward to hearing their accounts of the incident upon their return to enable appropriate support and any necessary follow-up actions.
She reiterated the Commission’s commitment to protecting the rights, welfare and dignity of Nigerians living abroad, stressing that NiDCOM would continue collaborating with relevant authorities to ensure the safety of citizens in the diaspora.
The NiDCOM boss also reaffirmed that safeguarding Nigerians, both at home and overseas, remains a key priority of the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
