Nigerian passport holders can access dozens of countries in 2026 through electronic visa (eVisa) systems, giving travellers an alternative to the traditional embassy visa application process.
According to a report based on data from Passport Index, Nigerians can obtain eVisas for at least 60 destinations across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, the Americas and other regions.
An eVisa is an official electronic travel authorisation that is linked to a traveller’s passport. Instead of visiting an embassy to submit a physical visa application, eligible travellers can apply online and, if approved, receive their visa or approval document electronically.
Countries offering eVisa access to Nigerians
The destinations identified for Nigerian passport holders include:
Afghanistan, Albania, Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Bahrain, Bhutan, Bolivia, Botswana, Burundi, Cambodia, Cape Verde, Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Ecuador, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Guyana, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Malaysia, Mauritania, Moldova, Namibia, Nicaragua, Oman, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Qatar, São Tomé and Príncipe, Serbia, Seychelles, Singapore, Somalia, South Africa, South Korea, Suriname, Syria, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, Venezuela, Vietnam, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Passport Index’s 2026 Nigerian passport dashboard similarly lists several destinations, including Ethiopia, Gabon, Israel, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, as offering eVisa options to Nigerian citizens.
How the eVisa process works
The electronic visa process generally requires travellers to complete an online application and provide personal and travel information. Depending on the destination, applicants may also be required to upload documents such as a passport photograph, proof of accommodation, return or onward flight details and other supporting documents.
Once an application is approved, the traveller normally receives an electronic visa or approval letter by email. The document may then be presented to immigration officials when entering the destination country.
However, an eVisa should not automatically be interpreted as guaranteed entry. Travellers must meet the individual country’s immigration requirements, including passport-validity rules, financial requirements and permitted purposes of travel.
Nigerians still have visa-free options
The eVisa destinations are separate from countries where Nigerians can enter without obtaining a visa in advance or where visas are issued on arrival.
Travel information published by Travelstart also lists numerous destinations available to Nigerian passport holders through visa-free, visa-on-arrival or other simplified entry arrangements.
The Nigerian passport’s travel access has therefore expanded beyond traditional visa applications, although many countries still require Nigerian citizens to obtain a conventional visa before travelling.
Travellers are advised to verify the latest requirements directly with the immigration authorities or official government website of their intended destination before booking a flight, as visa policies, fees and eligibility conditions can change.
