Old Video of General J.A. Ankrah Criticising Kwame Nkrumah, Calling Him Useless After 1966 Coup Surfaces, Sparks Debate In Ghana

An old video of Ghana’s former military leader, General Joseph Arthur Ankrah, has resurfaced online and sparked heated discussions among Ghanaians.

In the footage, General Ankrah is heard criticising former President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah following the February 24, 1966 military coup that removed Ghana’s first president from office.

He accused Nkrumah’s government of what he described as “tyranny and partisanship,” while also making strong remarks about his leadership style.

The video has attracted significant attention on social media, with many Ghanaians sharing different views about the events surrounding the coup and its impact on the country’s history.

Some commentators have argued that the overthrow of Nkrumah marked the beginning of political instability and setbacks in Ghana’s development journey, blaming subsequent military interventions for affecting the country’s progress.

Others have defended the reasons given by the coup leaders at the time, pointing to allegations made against Nkrumah’s administration, including concerns about governance and political control.

General J.A. Ankrah became the head of state after the coup and led the National Liberation Council (NLC), which governed Ghana from 1966 to 1969.

The resurfaced footage has reignited national conversations about Nkrumah’s legacy, the role of military interventions in Ghana’s history, and whether the 1966 coup was a turning point that shaped the country’s political and economic direction.
