Osun APC warns against blame game after governorship election defeat

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned members against engaging in a blame game over the party’s defeat in the August 15 governorship election, saying such actions could worsen internal divisions and undermine efforts to rebuild the party ahead of future elections.

The party also condemned what it described as attempts by individuals and groups to create division within its ranks by blaming some of its leaders for the outcome of the election.

In a statement issued on Friday by its Director of Media and Information, Mogaji Kola Olabisi, the Osun APC said sponsored newspaper publications and video messages targeting some of its leaders had emerged following the defeat of its governorship candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party winner of the August 15 governorship election after he defeated Oyebamiji of the APC.

Reacting to the criticisms trailing the election result, the Osun APC said assigning blame would not address the challenges confronting the party.

The party acknowledged the disappointment among its members and supporters who worked for the APC candidate but expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome of the election.

“It has been observed that sponsored newspaper articles by some emergency faceless organisations and recorded video messages have flooded both the social and traditional media, accusing some of the leaders of our party as being responsible for the current unenviable plight of our party with reference to the outcome of the last governorship election in the state,” the statement said.

The party defended its leadership, saying its leaders had contributed significantly to sustaining the APC through their resources, time and counsel.

It warned that attempts to discredit party leaders would do little to resolve the problems facing the organisation or position it for future electoral contests.

The Osun APC further alleged that some individuals who worked against the party during the election were behind the campaign of blame against its leadership.

“It is particularly worrisome and nauseating to note that the blame game ploy has been oozing out, by proxy, from the tendencies of those who, information confirmed, glaringly worked against our party in favour of Governor Ademola Adeleke by clandestinely and frivolously engaging in acts of sabotage during the 15th August, 2026 governorship election,” it said.

The party urged members genuinely interested in its progress to shift their attention from accusations and focus on finding solutions to its organisational and electoral challenges.

It said rebuilding the party would require constructive engagement, stronger structures and a collective effort ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to the APC, “hiding in the corner of one’s bedroom from where hired writers are employed to throw brickbats at real or imaginary enemies within the same party won’t help the present and future plight of the party.”

The party also commended its members and supporters who campaigned and worked for the victory of its candidate, assuring them that their efforts would not be ignored.

It added that party stakeholders would eventually be judged by their contributions to the election outcome, whether their actions helped or hindered the party.

The warning comes as the Osun APC begins to contend with the political fallout from its defeat, with the party expected to review its performance and address internal concerns as it prepares for subsequent elections.
