The First Lady of Osun State, Mrs Titilola Adeleke, led a delegation of women to the state police command headquarters in Osogbo on Monday to protest alleged voter intimidation and reported moves to detain political leaders in advance of the August 15 governorship election.
Accompanied by the Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs and the Special Adviser on Market Affairs, Adeleke joined the protesters in a march from Lameco through the West Bypass to police headquarters, where they submitted a formal petition to the Election Duties Commissioner, CP Samuel Etaifo, demanding assurance of a peaceful and credible election process.
During her address to the police commissioner, Adeleke alleged that certain Accord Party officials were being targeted for arrest by opposition actors.
She specifically referenced the reported apprehension of the Commissioner for Environment the preceding Friday, claiming he had been subjected to demeaning treatment whilst in police custody.
She expressed concern that additional leadership figures would be arrested during the coming week and appealed for cessation of such actions.
CP Etaifo responded to the protesters with assurances that police would facilitate a peaceful electoral environment.
He noted that security conditions had improved since his deployment but cautioned political actors against engaging in activities that could escalate tensions.
He stated that his posting to Osun followed the Inspector-General of Police’s directive to stabilise the state, create conditions enabling all political participants and voters to operate freely, and build public confidence in the electoral process.
The police commissioner indicated that the command would consider the petitioners’ concerns and modify security approaches where appropriate, pledging to undertake strategic reassessment to address the stated demands.
