Over 44,000 Nigerians Flew Emirates In Summer 2025, As China, Dubai Dominate Travel Choices

LAGOS – Emirates has reported a strong surge in outbound travel from Nigeria, with more than 44,000 passengers flying from the country on its network during the 2025 summer travel season, underscoring Nigerians’ growing appetite for international travel and reinforcing the airlines’ confidence in the Nigerian market ahead of summer 2026.

Passenger data released by the Dubai-based carrier, covering the period between May 1 and August 31, 2025, shows that China emerged as the most visited destination for Nigerian travellers, while Dubai, the

United Kingdom and the United States also ranked among the leading markets.

The airline said the figures reflect not only the strength of business and commercial links between Nigeria and major global economies but also increasing demand for leisure travel, higher education, religious pilgrimages and visits to family members abroad.

The latest data comes as the global aviation industry continues to witness sustained recovery. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), international passenger demand has continued to grow above pre-pandemic levels in many regions, driven by stronger consumer confidence, expanding airline networks and rising tourism activity.

For Emirates, which serves Lagos with daily flights via Dubai, Nigeria remains one of its most strategic markets in West Africa, providing passengers with onward connections to more than 140 destinations across its worldwide network.

China accounted for the highest number of passengers from Nigeria during the period, attracting 11,530 travellers.

According to the airline, Guangzhou remained the principal destination, receiving almost 80 per cent of Nigerian passengers travelling to mainland China.

The city has for decades served as a major commercial centre for Nigerian traders involved in the importation of machinery, electronics, textiles, household goods and industrial equipment.

Other Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, also attracted considerable passenger traffic, illustrating the expanding commercial relationship between Nigeria and China and the increasing movement of business executives, investors and professionals between both countries.

Industry analysts note that China has consistently ranked among Nigeria’s largest trading partners, making air connectivity between both countries critical to facilitating commerce and investment.

Dubai maintained its position as one of the most attractive destinations for Nigerian travellers, recording more than 6,370 passengers during the four-month summer period.

The city continues to draw visitors seeking shopping, luxury tourism, conferences, business opportunities and family holidays, while also functioning as Emirates’ global hub for seamless onward connections to destinations across Europe, Asia, North America, Africa and Oceania.

The United Kingdom remained another major destination, welcoming over 5,850 passengers from Nigeria through the Emirates network.

The airline disclosed that London Heathrow handled more than 2,500 passengers, accounting for over 43 per cent of all UK-bound traffic from Nigeria.
