A group, the PDP Advocates for Peace and Justice (PAPA-J), has threatened to institute legal action against the Akwa Ibom State Government over plans to recommission the international terminal building of the Victor Attah International Airport.
In a statement issued in Uyo on Sunday and signed by its Chairman, Tom Fredfish, and Secretary, Saviour Uko, the group argued that recommissioning the terminal would amount to an unnecessary duplication of an official government process and an avoidable use of public funds.
PAPA-J said the international terminal building was officially commissioned on May 26, 2023, during the administration of former Governor Udom Emmanuel. The group contended that while the current administration may inaugurate newly completed infrastructure or celebrate the commencement of international flight operations, it should not present the terminal building itself as a newly commissioned project.
According to the group, if additional facilities or equipment have been completed at the airport, those projects can be commissioned separately. PAPA-J urged the state government to remove the international terminal building from the list of projects scheduled for commissioning, warning that it would seek judicial intervention if the plan proceeds.
As of the time of filing this report, the Akwa Ibom State Government had not publicly responded to the group’s position.
