Post-Election Violence: Adeleke Meets New Osun CP, Lists 5 Demands To Restore Trust In Police
The new Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Ibrahim D. Zungura, on Monday, paid a courtesy visit to the state Governor, Ademola Adeleke.
According to the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, CP Zungura promised to restore public confidence in the police and ensure impartial law and order across Osun.
“I promise to work with the state government for peace and stability of the state. I will be fair to all, and I will prove my commitment in the next few weeks. Osun is a peaceful state, and we will work to address all outstanding issues,” the CP was quoted as saying.
The statement noted that Governor Adeleke, while welcoming the new CP, said the state was still grappling with post-election unrest, citing Monday’s incident in Ikire where two people were killed.
He alleged that the DPO of Irewole Division was fingered in the shooting.
“Based on all details of the attacks, I request immediate commencement of disciplinary action against the DPO. He has become a threat to the people he was posted to protect,” the governor said.
The governor listed five specific requests as part of efforts to consolidate peace and reconciliation.
He called for deliberate steps to rebuild public trust in the police and remove conduct that paints the force as partisan, a closer working relationship between the state government and the command, and reorganisation of police operational units allegedly compromised.
Adeleke also demanded full police participation at State Security Council meetings, noting that “the last time your predecessor attended a state security council meeting was in 2024.”

He further called for the release of several Accord members arrested and detained as political detainees and an end to further arrests of party members.
The governor assured that his administration is ready to support police operations without conditions.
“Our government is ready to support police operations without any strings attached. What we seek is fair policing,” Adeleke stated.
The statement noted that the duo agreed to work toward peacebuilding and reconciliation following months of political tension in the state.
