A female motorist has died after her vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a building in the Mongoro area of Lagos, an accident that traffic authorities have linked to excessive speed.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said the victim, who was driving alone, lost control of her Toyota Sienna before the vehicle rammed into a roadside structure along the Mongoro inward Ile-Zik corridor.
In a statement issued on Sunday, LASTMA Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, said preliminary findings indicated that the deceased was driving a Toyota Sienna with registration number LND 162 HB when the crash occurred.

Taofiq said the impact of the collision was severe, leaving the driver with fatal injuries.
He said, “The ferocity of the impact proved catastrophic, resulting in her instantaneous death.”
According to LASTMA, officers on routine patrol responded immediately after the accident by securing the scene and diverting traffic to prevent secondary crashes.
The agency said its personnel cordoned off the affected section of the road while ensuring that vehicular movement was restored as quickly as possible. Although the incident caused temporary traffic disruption, normal flow resumed after emergency measures were put in place.
Reacting to the crash, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the incident was another reminder of the consequences of speeding, urging motorists to prioritise safety over haste.
Bakare-Oki said, “Every journey must be undertaken with prudence, patience, and an unwavering commitment to established traffic regulations. No destination is worth the ultimate sacrifice of human life.”
He stressed that excessive speed is one of the leading causes of fatal road crashes and urged drivers to exercise restraint, maintain concentration and obey traffic rules at all times.
The LASTMA boss also advised motorists to inspect their vehicles before setting out on any journey, noting that mechanical defects, when ignored, could worsen already dangerous situations on the road.
The agency extended its condolences to the family of the deceased and prayed for the strength to bear the loss.
The latest fatality adds to concerns over road safety in Lagos, where speeding, dangerous driving, and poor vehicle maintenance continue to contribute to preventable crashes despite sustained public awareness campaigns by traffic and emergency agencies.
Only a day earlier, three separate road accidents were recorded in different parts of the state. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that the incidents occurred at Olupese Bus Stop inward Oshodi, Aswani Bus Stop inward Iyana Isolo and Oba Ogunji Road in Ikeja.
While those crashes left three people injured without any loss of life, Sunday’s incident ended differently, underscoring the narrow line between survival and tragedy whenever motorists disregard speed limits and basic road safety precautions.
Traffic authorities have repeatedly maintained that reducing speeding, improving vehicle maintenance and observing traffic regulations remain critical to lowering the number of fatal crashes on Lagos roads.
