Osun State University(UNIOSUN ) has emerged as the third highest-ranked state-owned university in Nigeria after improving its position in the latest Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, a development the institution says reflects years of investment in research, digital scholarship, and international academic visibility.
The university announced on Monday that it had secured the 19th position among 312 universities assessed across Nigeria in the July 2026 edition of the Webometrics ranking. It also ranked 137th out of 2,390 universities evaluated across Africa, according to a statement issued by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji.
This ranking represents another milestone for the Osogbo-based university which has steadily sought to strengthen its research profile in an increasingly competitive higher education landscape where global visibility and academic output now play a central role in institutional reputation.

According to the university, the improvement reflects deliberate investments in research, innovation, quality teaching, digital scholarship, and international collaborations aimed at positioning the institution among globally competitive universities.
Adesoji stated that the ranking demonstrates UNIOSUN’s growing academic reputation and expanding visibility beyond Nigeria. He added that the university has continued to strengthen its research capacity while improving its online academic presence.
He explained that the achievement was the product of collective efforts involving the Governing Council, management, academic and non-academic staff, students, alumni, and other stakeholders committed to institutional development.
Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, described the ranking as an independent validation of the institution’s long-term strategic direction rather than an isolated accomplishment.
Adebooye asserted that the university’s progress stemmed from sustained emphasis on research excellence, innovation, and purposeful service.
He said the ranking is indicative of the commitment of the university community to continuous improvement and global competitiveness.

He established that strengthening research capacity, improving digital visibility, and maintaining quality teaching had collectively contributed to the university’s rising profile.
The Vice-Chancellor further said the institution would not regard the latest ranking as an end in itself but as motivation to pursue higher academic standards and broader international recognition.
He said, “Being ranked 19th among all universities in Nigeria, third among state universities and 137th in Africa is a clear indication that our collective efforts are yielding tangible results on the global stage.”
He added that the university’s long-term objective is to consolidate its current gains and secure a place among the leading universities in both Nigeria and Africa.
