10 Things You Need Know About Dangote Refinery IPO

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has officially launched what is expected to become Africa’s biggest Initial Public Offering (IPO), opening the door for millions of Nigerians to own a stake in the $20 billion refinery for as little as ₦5,250.

What Is An IPO?

IPO means Initial Public Offering. Simply put, it is the first time a private company sells part of its ownership to the public through the stock market. Think of it as buying a small ownership stake in the company rather than simply buying its products.

After receiving approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on September 5, 2026, the refinery is offering 4.1 billion ordinary shares to the public at ₦525 per share, with plans to raise about ₦2.15 trillion to finance an expansion project. The public offer is being described by Aliko Dangote as “the IPO for the people.”

1. You Can Invest With Just ₦5,250

For the first time, everyday Nigerians can become shareholders in Africa’s largest refinery with a relatively small amount.

The minimum subscription is 10 ordinary shares, and each share costs ₦525, bringing the entry cost to ₦5,250. Additional shares can be purchased in multiples specified in the offer documents through licensed stockbrokers and approved investment platforms.

2. It Is the Biggest IPO In Africa’s History

Dangote Refinery is seeking to raise ₦2.15 trillion (about $1.6 billion) through the public offer, making it the largest IPO ever undertaken on the African continent.

The refinery is valued at approximately $47–49 billion, making it one of the largest companies expected to trade on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX). Analysts said  its listing could significantly increase the overall value of Nigeria’s stock market.

3. The IPO Opens On September 14 and Closes on October 13

The subscription period will run for about one month.
