The 2027 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has said he will not travel abroad for medical treatment if elected president of Nigeria.
Sowore made the statement during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, where he outlined his position on healthcare, the Presidency and the role of family members in government.
The AAC candidate said he was prepared to rely on Nigeria’s healthcare system and would not seek medical treatment outside the country while serving as president.
“Any sickness that I can’t treat in Nigeria when I become president should better kill me. I can tell you that for free,” Sowore said.
He also said he would not bring what he described as “family liabilities” into Nigeria if elected, stressing that his focus would be on serving Nigerians rather than using the Presidency for personal or family interests.
Sowore further said he would not establish an official Office of the First Lady, arguing that the position is not provided for in the Nigerian Constitution.
“I’m not bringing family liabilities back to Nigeria. There is no office of First Lady in the Nigerian Constitution,” he said.
The presidential candidate clarified that abolishing the office would not affect his marriage, but maintained that his wife would not occupy an official First Lady position.
“Becoming president will not abolish my marriage, but I will not have the office of First Lady,” he added.
According to Sowore, women would still have a role in his administration, but he opposed the use of public funds for what he described as an unconstitutional office.
“Women will be heard, but I don’t believe that you need a First Lady who is holding an unconstitutional position and just wasting money that is meant for progress and projects,” he said.
Sowore’s comments form part of his stated positions as he campaigns for the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the AAC.
