The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has condemned the extension of the tenure of the Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University, UNIOSUN, Osogbo, describing it as a violation of the Universities Miscellaneous Act.
The resolution was contained in the communiqué issued at the end of ASUU’s Emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at the Comrade Festus Iyayi National Secretariat, University of Abuja, a copy obtained by NAIJAONPOINT on Tuesday.
The communique, signed by ASUU President Christopher Piwuna, noted that the Visitor to the University, Governor Ademola Adeleke, extended the Vice-Chancellor’s tenure by two years without recourse to due process.
NAIJAONPOINT reports that Governor Adeleke last week Monday announced the extension of the VC’s tenure, a development that was later ratified by the Osun State House of Assembly through an amendment bill passed to accommodate the extension.
Rising from the meeting, ASUU NEC mandated the UNIOSUN Branch to “go back and mobilise the Branch to rise and respond courageously to the flagrant violation of the Miscellaneous Act as amplified in the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement.
To further address the matter, NEC resolved to constitute a Visitation Team to the Osogbo campus within two weeks.
The team is expected to interact with the University Administration, Governing Council and the Visitor to press for reversal of the extension.
In addition, ASUU NEC resolved to issue a strong press statement on the matter, vowing to resist what it called “the illegality” at UNIOSUN.
NEC also reaffirmed its earlier position approving strike action for branches that had issued 14-day ultimatums, while reiterating the “No-Pay-No-Work” policy for branches whose salaries are not paid after the 3rd day of the month. It further resolved to write the Minister of Education and meet with the Committee of Vice-Chancellors over the slow implementation of the agreement nationwide.
