The Lagos State University branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU-LASU, has declared an indefinite strike over what it described as the government’s failure to implement the 2025 ASUU/Federal Government agreement.
The decision followed a congress held by the union on Tuesday, September 15, where members resolved to suspend academic activities until the issues surrounding the agreement are satisfactorily addressed.
In a statement signed by the Secretary of the ASUU-LASU Steering Committee, Comrade Thanny Nooem, and its Coordinator, Comrade Oluwaseun Babalola, the union said the industrial action followed months of engagement with the government.
The lecturers said repeated discussions had failed to resolve longstanding demands concerning the implementation of the agreement reached between ASUU and the Federal Government in 2025.
“This unfortunate and avoidable action has become necessary due to the continued failure of the Government to address the Union’s longstanding agitation over the implementation of the 2025 ASUU/FGN Agreement,” the statement read.
ASUU-LASU said the central condition for ending the strike was the “full domestication and implementation of the 2025 ASUU/FGN Agreement”.
It further declared that the industrial action would cover all relevant academic activities until the dispute was resolved.
“The strike shall be total and comprehensive until there is a satisfactory resolution of the issues in dispute,” the union stated.
The declaration puts teaching and other academic activities at Lagos State University on hold, including operations at the Ojo campus and other campuses, pending further developments.
The union’s action comes after what its leadership characterised as a prolonged attempt to settle the matter through dialogue. ASUU-LASU said members had exercised patience during the engagements but eventually concluded that further discussions had not produced the outcome they expected.
The dispute centres on the implementation of the 2025 agreement between the university lecturers’ union and the Federal Government. ASUU-LASU is seeking the incorporation and enforcement of the agreement within the university’s institutional framework.
The phrase “domestication” in the union’s demand points to its insistence that the provisions of the national agreement should be formally adopted and applied within the Lagos State University system.
The strike could have immediate consequences for students, lecturers and university administration if it persists. Lectures, assessments, examinations and other academic programmes may be affected depending on the duration of the industrial action and the response from the relevant authorities.
The union expressed regret over the disruption but maintained that it considered the action necessary after its earlier attempts at engagement failed to settle the disagreement.
It ended its statement with the familiar labour slogan, “Aluta continua, victoria ascerta.”
At LASU, the immediate issue is now the resolution of the 2025 agreement dispute. The duration of the shutdown will depend on whether the parties can return to negotiations and reach terms acceptable to the union.
Until then, students and members of the university community face uncertainty over the continuation of academic programmes across the institution’s campuses.
