Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has lamented the devastating flood in Ugwueke, Amaokai, Amaeze and Ezeukwu communities in Bende local government area of Abia state.
Reports said two persons lost their lives after two days of torrential rainfall that submerged many homes, including the palaces of two traditional rulers, Eze Ifeanyi Owo of Amaeze Community and Eze Gilbert Chukwu of Amaokai community in the federal constituency.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu who represents Bende Federal Constituency, described the incident as tragic and heartbreaking, and extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and all those affected.
He called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and other relevant agencies to urgently intervene with relief materials and support to cushion the impact on victims.
Kalu further assured the affected communities of his continued commitment to engaging relevant federal agencies to address the ecological challenges in the area and prevent future occurrence.
Bende federal consistency is hard-hit by ecological problems, the biggest seen in Uzuakoli electoral ward which has claimed many lives and buildings already.
The Deputy Speaker also prayed for the peaceful repose of the departed souls and for strength and quick recovery for all victims of the disaster.
