Doja Cat Gets Candid About Past Cocaine & Alcohol Struggles, Says She’s ‘Well Past’ That Chapter

Doja Cat gets candid about a chapter of her life that she has not always been so open about. She recently talked about her previous substance abuse in a series of videos online.
The “Vie” rapper recently took to TikTok with a series of candid videos about her healing journey, past substance use, mental health, and the complicated relationship between social media and self-worth.
According to Complex, Doja explained that alcohol and the internet once became a dangerous combination for her, particularly when she was already dealing with negative thoughts.
“The best example from my experience is using the internet as a means of validation to the negative thoughts in my head which were then brought on by drinking alcohol,” she said.
Doja was also clear about her history with drugs. While she said she never experienced a serious drug problem beyond weed, she revealed that she struggled with cocaine approximately eight years ago. Thankfully, she says that chapter is behind her.
“I have struggled with cocaine, I think could have been like eight years ago, but I’m well past that so thank God,” she shared.
According to The Sun, Doja also pushed back against describing herself as an alcoholic, explaining that while alcohol was a problem for her, she never identified as one. Her bigger point was about recognizing unhealthy patterns before they spiral.
And honestly, that conversation hits differently in the social media era.
Doja connected substance use with what she described as unaddressed mental health struggles and the constant search for validation online. She encouraged people to think twice before allowing comments from strangers to reinforce negative beliefs about themselves.
Her comments come as she also addressed online accusations that she is “demonic,” racist, a White supremacist, or a Nazi. Doja rejected those claims and spoke about growing more comfortable with her identity and appearance as she has gotten older.
The conversation is bigger than Doja, though. As Global Grind previously explored in “Celebrities Who Opened Up About Rehab & Recovery”, more celebrities are choosing transparency when discussing addiction, treatment, sobriety, and mental health. From Demi Lovato and Lamar Odom to Jamie Lee Curtis and Robert Downey Jr., their stories remind us that recovery is rarely one straight line.
Doja Cat may not be presenting herself as someone with all the answers. Instead, she is sharing what she has learned.
And sometimes, admitting that you made it through something is the first step toward helping somebody else make it through, too.
