Four Killed as Russia Launches Major Attack on Ukraine, Kyiv Hits Russian Oil Facilities
At least four people have been killed following a major Russian attack on southeastern Ukraine, according to Ukrainian authorities.
The governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region said industrial areas in Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih and Pavlohrad were hit.
He said Russia used missiles, drones and artillery during the attacks, which also left at least six people injured.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense said its forces carried out a massive attack by land, air and sea targeting Ukraine’s chemical and metal industries. It also claimed ships were targeted.
Other parts of Ukraine were also hit.
In the Chernihiv region, an electricity facility was damaged, reportedly leaving almost 100,000 people without power.
Authorities in the Poltava region also reported attacks on businesses but said there were no casualties.
In Kyiv, three people were injured, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Two of them were taken to hospital.
An apartment building in the southern part of the Ukrainian capital was also reportedly hit by a drone.
Ukraine hits Russian oil facilities
Ukraine also launched attacks inside Russia overnight.
Authorities in Russia’s Samara region, around 1,000 kilometres from the Ukrainian border, said air defences shot down dozens of drones.
The regional governor said one person was killed and four others were injured.
Samara officials reported damage to homes and vehicles.
Ukrainian media, however, reported that a large oil refinery in the Samara region was also hit. Images shared online appeared to show large clouds of black smoke rising from the area.
Later in the morning, Ukraine’s military confirmed that it had attacked an oil facility in Samara.
The Ukrainian military also said it targeted oil industry facilities in Ufa, hundreds of kilometres further northwest.
Officials in Samara did not mention an attack on the oil facility in their initial statements.
Local authorities also warned residents not to share images showing damage caused by the attacks.
