The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has said he remains a father figure to all politicians seeking elective offices in the 2027 elections, regardless of their political affiliations.
The Sultan stated this on Monday when he received the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, at his palace in Sokoto.
Obi and Kwankwaso were accompanied by the NDC’s Sokoto State governorship candidate, Dr Shamsu Haido, and other party members during the visit.
The meeting formed part of the NDC candidates’ political engagements and consultations with traditional and community leaders ahead of the 2027 general election.
The visit came about two weeks after the 2027 All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, led by its Director-General, Senator Abdul-Aziz Abubakar Yari, visited the Sultan.
The APC delegation visited the monarch on September 14, alongside Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu, as well as the governors of Kebbi and Zamfara states and other members of the campaign council.
In a statement signed by Prince Bashir Adefaka on behalf of the Sultan’s Media Team, the monarch said his engagement with political actors was part of his commitment to providing a fatherly presence to all Nigerians seeking political office.
“In continuation of his commitment to providing himself as a father figure to all Nigerians aspiring to political offices in 2027 without favouritism, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, on Monday, September 28, 2026, received the presidential candidate and vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, respectively, in his palace in Sokoto City, Sokoto State,” the statement said.
The Sultan’s engagements with political groups come as parties and candidates intensify consultations with traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders ahead of the 2027 elections.
The monarch had also recently urged politicians to avoid insults and inflammatory statements capable of creating tension during the election season.
