African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of being an appendage of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Sowore made the allegation while reacting to recent comments by INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, who reaffirmed the commission’s neutrality ahead of the 2027 general election.
Amupitan had said INEC had no candidate or political party to favour, adding that the commission’s only interest was the sovereign will of Nigerians.
Reacting, Sowore said:
“INEC is an appendage of the ruling party. Let INEC Chairman, Prof. Amupitan, say what he wants to say. He is working for APC.”
The AAC candidate did not provide specific evidence in the statement to support his allegation that Amupitan was working for the APC.
Amupitan had made his comments during a visit to the Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, as part of INEC’s stakeholder engagement and preparations for the 2027 elections.
The INEC chairman said the commission had started preparations early and was testing, auditing and strengthening its systems ahead of the polls. He also reiterated its commitment to neutrality, fairness and transparency.
Sowore’s comments have since generated reactions online, with some social media users questioning INEC’s independence while others criticised the AAC candidate over his position.
