The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has clarified the meanings of three admission statuses displayed on candidates’ Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS). It explained that “Not Admitted” does not necessarily end a candidate’s chances of securing a place.
The clarification is significant for thousands of candidates monitoring their admission prospects as institutions process offers for the 2026/2027 academic session.
In an explainer video released by the Board on Thursday, JAMB broke down the meanings of “Not Admitted”, “Admission in Progress” and “Admitted”, while explaining what candidates should expect at each stage.
For candidates seeing “Not Admitted” on their CAPS profile, JAMB said the status simply indicates that no admission offer has been made to them at that point.
“This simply means you’ve not been offered admission yet. However, it does not necessarily mean you will not be admitted,” the Board stated.
Candidates in that category are expected to keep checking their CAPS because their status may change as institutions submit and process admission recommendations.
JAMB gave a more detailed explanation of the “Admission in Progress” status, which can be particularly confusing for applicants who interpret it as confirmation of admission.
The Board said the designation may appear after an institution’s admission officer has proposed a candidate for admission but the recommendation is still awaiting approval from the head of the institution.
It can also occur when the head of the institution has endorsed the recommendation but JAMB has yet to approve or reject the proposed offer.
JAMB cautioned that neither situation constitutes a confirmed admission.
“Please note that ‘Admission in Progress’ does not mean automatic admission,” the Board said.
The agency explained that a proposed admission could still be rejected if the candidate fails to satisfy the required conditions.
“This is because the recommended offer could still be disapproved by the Board if you don’t meet the prerequisite requirements,” it stated.
The status changes to “Admitted” only after JAMB gives formal approval to the offer. At that stage, candidates receive the confirmation message, “CONGRATULATIONS, YOU HAVE BEEN OFFERED ADMISSION.”
Successful applicants can then use CAPS to accept or reject the offer.

JAMB also noted that CAPS is not a static record during the admission cycle. A candidate’s status can change as institutions submit recommendations and the Board completes its checks.
“Remember, your CAPS status will keep changing as the admission process continues until the final stage where you print your admission letter,” JAMB stated.
The Board advised candidates to check their CAPS regularly and obtain admission information through its verified communication channels to avoid acting on unconfirmed claims.
The clarification effectively places the three labels in sequence: “Not Admitted” means no offer has been made yet, “Admission in Progress” indicates that a proposed offer is undergoing further processing, while “Admitted” signifies that JAMB has formally approved the placement.
