Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone has praised Julián Álvarez after the striker rejected a transfer to Arsenal.
The Argentine forward had indicated that he wanted to leave Atlético during the summer transfer window.
Arsenal expressed interest in signing him and were reportedly prepared to negotiate with the Spanish club.
However, Álvarez did not want to join the Premier League champions.
The 26-year-old preferred a move to Barcelona, but Atlético refused to sell him to their La Liga rivals.
The situation reportedly frustrated Álvarez and damaged his relationship with some Atlético supporters.
He missed training sessions near the end of the transfer window and was unavailable for some matches.
The window has now closed, leaving Álvarez at Atlético Madrid until at least January.
Simeone said the experience should become a learning opportunity for the World Cup winner.
“I hope this has served as a valuable lesson for him,” Simeone said.
The coach praised Álvarez for not allowing his ego to influence how he handled the situation.
He also confirmed that the striker had returned to training and would be included in Atlético’s squad for their match against Athletic Bilbao.
Simeone said Álvarez was training well and remained an important player for the team.
Álvarez joined Atlético Madrid from Manchester City in 2024.
Despite the recent disagreement, Simeone said the club was happy with what the forward contributes and would focus on the season ahead.
Arsenal ended the transfer window without signing Álvarez. The club could reportedly reconsider a move when the January window opens, depending on his situation in Madrid.
