Kogi declares three-day mourning, state burial for ex-gov Ibrahim Idris

Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has ordered three days of mourning for former governor Ibrahim Idris and approved a state burial for the late leader.

The decision was announced on Sunday, 20 September, 2026, after Ododo visited the Idris family and expressed condolences over the death of the former governor.

The former governor Ibrahim Idris reportedly died in the U.K. on Sunday, 20 September, 2026.

During the mourning period, the national flag and Kogi State flag will fly at half-mast at government offices and other designated public institutions across the state.

The state government will also take full responsibility for the burial expenses and make arrangements for Idris to receive the honour approved for a former governor.

Flags to fly at half-mast

Ododo had earlier visited the residence of the late governor, where he met members of the Idris family.

In a condolence letter to the family, the governor said Idris had devoted a significant part of his life to serving the people of Kogi State.

He said the death had deprived the state of an eminent son and described the former governor’s passing as a loss to Kogi and Nigeria.

Idris served as governor of Kogi State from 2003 to 2011. His administration covered areas including infrastructure, education and healthcare.

Ododo said the work carried out during Idris’s time in office had become part of the developmental history of the state.

The governor also said Idris would be remembered for his commitment to the duties given to him by the people.

“His years in public office formed an important chapter in the political and developmental journey of Kogi State,” Ododo said.

The three-day mourning period provides the immediate public response from the state government to the death of a former governor who led Kogi from 2003 to 2011.

The half-mast order applies to government offices and other designated public institutions throughout the mourning period.

Government takes charge of burial

Ododo also approved a state burial for Idris, with the Kogi State Government taking full responsibility for all burial expenses.

The government will make the necessary arrangements for the former governor’s burial as part of the honours approved for him.

In his message to the family, Ododo asked them to draw strength from memories of Idris’s years of service and the effect of his work on many people.

He also acknowledged the grief of Idris’s friends, associates and others mourning his death.

The governor extended condolences on behalf of the Kogi State Government and people to the Idris family and other mourners.

He prayed that Almighty Allah would forgive the deceased’s shortcomings, grant him Aljannatul Firdaus and give the family and people of Kogi State strength to bear the loss.

Idris’s eight-year period as governor, from 2003 to 2011, is the main part of his public service record cited by the state government as it announces the mourning arrangements and state burial.
