An African Democratic Congress chieftain, Dele Momodu, has explained why presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar chose detained former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai as deputy chairman of his campaign council.
Momodu said the appointment was meant to honour El-Rufai’s sacrifices.
Speaking on television Friday, he described El-Rufai’s situation as politically motivated rather than based on genuine criminal wrongdoing.
El-Rufai could have stayed out of the country but chose to return, knowing arrest was likely, Momodu said.
His bail conditions are so harsh that even his enemies would question why he must endure such treatment from a government he helped bring to power.
Momodu stressed that without El-Rufai’s support, President Tinubu would not be in office today.
The appointment therefore represents recognition of those contributions and the suffering he has faced since his return.
