Five men have been arrested in Maiduguri, Borno State, over T-shirts carrying the message “Tinubu Must Go”, according to a police document cited and reported by SaharaReporters.
Those arrested are Baba Aji Gremami, 44; Mustapha Abba Yemen, 28; Abbacha Mohammed Ali, 32; Adam Umar Gubio, 21; and Abdulhamid Mohammed, 21.
The matter was documented in a First Information Report issued by the State Criminal Investigation Department in Maiduguri on September 29, 2026, and forwarded to the Chief Magistrate Court in the city.
Police allege plan to disrupt public peace
The police accused the five men of working together to produce the shirts and allegedly wearing them around the West End Roundabout area of Maiduguri.
The allegations against them include criminal conspiracy, incitement, conduct capable of disrupting public peace and thuggery.
Police said their actions were allegedly intended to create a disturbance in the community. The charges were reportedly brought under Sections 60, 78, 79 and 392 of the Borno State Penal Code.
The FIR stated that the alleged incident occurred on September 25, 2026, at about 11am.
The police officer handling the investigation subsequently directed that the suspects be prosecuted in court.
Suspects reportedly remanded
A source quoted by SaharaReporters claimed that the arrests were made following an alleged directive from Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum to the state Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid.
The same source said the five men were later brought before a court and remanded in a correctional facility.
However, SaharaReporters reported that it had not independently confirmed the details of the court proceedings or established the specific conditions attached to the remand order.
Arrest comes amid 2027 political mobilisation
The development occurred against the backdrop of increased political activities ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Zulum recently returned from a visit to the United States and Canada and subsequently commenced an APC mobilisation drive in Borno, with the campaign aimed at supporting President Bola Tinubu and other candidates of the party.
The phrase “Tinubu Must Go” has previously appeared at protests and other political gatherings in different parts of Nigeria.
In this particular case, the police document connects the allegations against the five men specifically to the production and use of the T-shirts, while asserting that the activity was intended to cause a disturbance of public peace.
