Multiple protests in Rivers State have trailed the alleged shooting and killing of a young driver and fresh graduate of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Anthony Obodo, by a personnel of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
Obodo, aged 22, was allegedly shot dead on Thursday, 27th August 2026, by a police officer identified as Corporal Alfred Louis at a checkpoint on Agip Junction on Ada-George Road in Port Harcourt.
The police command, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt by its spokesperson, Blessing Agabe, said there was an altercation between the victim and the police officer before the shooting.
Agabe, who confirmed that two passers-by were injured during the shooting, stated that Louis and his team had been detained at the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID) in Port Harcourt.
LEADERSHIP observed that about three protests had been carried out in the deceased’s hometown, Agba-Ndele in Emohua local government area and in Port Harcourt, where the incident occurred.
The protesters demanded justice for Obodo, who was described as one of the brightest brains from the Agba-Ndele community.
Speaking to journalists after a meeting with the state commissioner of police, Olugbenga Adepoju and his management team, the father of the victim, Princewill Obodo, said he believed the police officers were paid to kill his son.
He alleged that the officers involved were initially deployed to provide security at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) conference held at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Elekahia, Port Harcourt, but were later moved to the area where his son was killed.
Princewill, who is also the vice-chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers East senatorial district, claimed that police authorities who visited his residence confirmed that Anthony was innocent.
