Concern has deepened over the whereabouts of a 37-year-old Nigerian woman who disappeared after leaving Hamad International Airport in Doha. Nigerian authorities are now seeking to establish whether she ever reached the hotel where she had booked accommodation.
The woman travelled from Lagos to Qatar on Tuesday 1, September 2026, aboard Qatar Airways flight QR1408 and was confirmed to have collected her luggage before exiting the airport. More than 72 hours later, her location had not been established.
The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Michael Achimugu, said the airline had reviewed airport surveillance footage and confirmed the woman’s movements inside the terminal up to the point she left with her luggage.
Achimugu said the investigation had consequently shifted towards tracing what happened after she departed the airport.
A key question for investigators is whether she checked into the hotel listed in her travel arrangements. According to the NCAA official, Qatar visa bookings are connected to hotel reservations, which makes the accommodation an important point of reference in tracing her movements.
He said Discover Qatar would verify the reservation and establish whether the woman arrived at the hotel.
The inquiry has been slowed by public holidays, Achimugu explained, but further checks are expected to provide additional information about her movements after she left the airport.
He said authorities would escalate the search if the woman was found not to have reached the hotel.
The uncertainty has caused particular concern within her family because the woman was reportedly visiting Qatar for the first time and had no known friends there.
Her brother, Jonathan Jibo, raised the alarm after communication with her abruptly stopped.
The family said she had maintained contact with Jibo through WhatsApp while her flight was approaching Doha. Communication was subsequently lost after her arrival.
Accommodation had reportedly been booked and paid for before her departure from Nigeria. An individual assigned to meet her at the airport was also unable to locate her.
The woman had worked at Lagos airport for almost 12 years and was expected to begin a new job in Qatar weeks after her arrival.
The circumstances surrounding her disappearance have also prompted authorities to consider the possibility of trafficking or forced labour. Achimugu said he had alerted the airline to those concerns, although there is no confirmation from the authorities that either had occurred.
The NCAA official stressed that determining whether the woman reached her hotel would be crucial to deciding the next phase of the inquiry.
Meanwhile, the family has appealed to Nigerian authorities, including the Nigerian Embassy in Qatar, to intensify efforts to locate her.
As far as the family is concerned, the unanswered question is what happened in the period between the woman’s confirmed departure from Hamad International Airport and the point at which communication with her ceased.
Authorities are expected to establish that movement as the search continues.
