Solomon Buchi Reacts To Viral Video Of Agberos Begging Chinese Tourist For Money

- Solomon Buchi commented on a viral video of Lagos transport workers (agberos) demanding money from a Chinese tourist.
- The incident has raised criticism and concern on social media.
- Many Nigerians are disappointed, fearing it could harm Nigeria’s image to international visitors.
Nigerian social commentator Solomon Buchi has reacted to a viral video showing some Lagos transport workers, popularly known as agberos, demanding money from a Chinese man who visited the state as a tourist.
The incident has sparked criticism and concern online, with many Nigerians expressing disappointment over how the situation could affect the country’s image among international visitors.
Reacting to the video, Buchi condemned the actions of the individuals involved, arguing that such behaviour could reinforce negative stereotypes about Nigerians among foreigners.
He particularly took issue with the justification reportedly given by the agberos, who were heard referring to the Chinese man as a Nigerian citizen while demanding money from him.
Buchi said the incident was unfortunate because Nigerians were effectively giving foreigners material that could be used to strengthen existing negative perceptions about the country.
He said, “Look at the Agberos saying, ‘He’s a Nigerian citizen,’ that’s why he’s demanding money from him. Nigerians are giving white people ammunition and material to keep building stereotypes about us. I think towards the end, he was advising millions of his audience, ‘I do not recommend you guys visit Nigeria.”
The social commentator’s remarks have since generated reactions from social media users, with many agreeing that incidents involving tourists can have consequences beyond the immediate situation.
