Sowore Faults Nigeria’s Healthcare System As India Hospital Features Abubakar In Promotional Footage
Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, Omoyele Sowore, has criticised successive Nigerian governments over the state of the country’s healthcare system after footage featuring former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, surfaced from an Indian hospital.
Sowore shared the footage on his Facebook page, showing Abubakar receiving treatment at Krishna Shalby Multispecialty Hospital in Ahmedabad, India.
In the footage, Abubakar was seen posing alongside a person believed to be a senior official of the hospital, while another scene showed him being assisted by a healthcare professional as he practised walking after his surgery.
Krishna Shalby Hospital has confirmed that Abubakar underwent total knee replacement surgery at the facility. The hospital described the treatment as part of its international patient care services.
Reacting to the footage, Sowore questioned why former Nigerian leaders who had opportunities to improve healthcare infrastructure in the country would seek specialised medical treatment abroad.

He described the development as an example of what he called “decades of failed leadership and neglect of Nigeria’s healthcare system.”
Sowore said Nigerian leaders had opportunities while in office to build first-class healthcare facilities that could provide specialised treatment for citizens within the country.
He further criticised what he described as a situation where former leaders travel abroad in old age for medical treatment that, in his view, should be available in Nigeria.
The human right activist also suggested that the use of Abubakar’s image in material associated with the Indian hospital could become an example of the irony surrounding Nigeria’s dependence on foreign medical facilities.
“At this rate, perhaps one day a hospital in France will be using a Nigerian president, Tinubu, for its adverts,” Sowore said.
