President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerians that the country is on the right path, declaring that the period of sacrifices is over and that peace, development and better times are ahead.
Tinubu gave the assurance in a message delivered by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, at a special prayer session marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary at the National Mosque, Abuja.
The President acknowledged the challenges that have characterised Nigeria’s journey since independence, describing the country as a nation that has matured despite years of difficulties and missed opportunities.
He said the 66th anniversary was a significant milestone in the nation’s history.
«“This anniversary, the 66th, by all accounts signifies Nigeria has come of age. The person of 66 years cannot be called a child anymore. Nigeria has become mature, even though when we reflect on the journey from independence to date, we may say it was a mixed journey.”»
Tinubu noted that Nigeria had been confronted by numerous challenges over the years but expressed gratitude to God for sustaining the country and preserving peace.
The President said his administration was working to correct what he described as past mistakes and take advantage of opportunities that had previously been missed.
Making a strong appeal for continued public confidence, Tinubu declared:
«“I want to categorically make it clear that Nigeria is on the right path. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Nigeria has finished making sacrifices for this country to be great again.”»
He urged Nigerians not to lose hope, promising that the country would witness improved security, development and economic conditions as democracy progresses.
Abbas, who delivered the President’s message, quoted him as saying:
«“My message to the country on behalf of Mr President, the Senate President and all members of the National Assembly is that the citizens should not lose hope. Peace is coming back to this country. Development is coming back to this country. Things will get better as we progress in this democracy.”»
Tinubu also appealed to Nigerians to give his administration more time and opportunity to complete its ongoing programmes and reforms.
The declaration comes amid continuing public concerns over the cost of living, insecurity, unemployment and economic pressures confronting households across the country.
For many Nigerians, the President’s assurance now places greater emphasis on the government’s ability to translate its promises of recovery, peace and development into measurable improvements in the daily lives of citizens.
