President Bola Tinubu will address Nigerians on October 1, 2026 as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
The Federal Government announced this on Thursday after inaugurating an inter-ministerial committee to organize the celebrations.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume said the anniversary gives Nigerians a chance to reflect on the contributions and sacrifices of the country’s founding fathers.
Akume noted that Nigeria’s progress since independence was built on foundations laid by nationalists who fought colonial rule.
He said the celebration will also showcase the current administration’s achievements and reform efforts in tackling socio-economic challenges.
The 66th anniversary will be marked on a low-key basis, Akume said, adding that committee members should work urgently given limited time before October 1.
Activities start September 24 with a world press conference.
A Juma’at service follows on September 25, a church service on September 27, and an independence lecture on September 30.
President Tinubu’s nationwide broadcast concludes the celebrations on October 1.
The committee includes Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele, Information Minister Mohammed Idris, Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Budget Minister Abubakar Atiku Bagudu.
The National Security Adviser, Inspector-General of Police and other security chiefs are also members.
