United States President Donald Trump has proposed renaming the state of New Mexico as “New America.”
Trump made the suggestion in a post on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, claiming that several people had proposed changing the state’s name.
He wrote, “Many people suggested changing the name of New Mexico… to ‘New America.’ So much more prestigious and beautiful for the people of that potentially incredible State. Wow, I love it.”
However, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham swiftly rejected the proposal, insisting that the state’s name was not open for discussion.
Speaking to Fox News, Grisham said, “The name isn’t up for debate — it’s been ours since before the United States existed.”
The governor also accused Trump of attempting to distract Americans from pressing issues, including rising petrol prices.
Following Trump’s post, the White House reposted an image of the state’s name with “Mexico” crossed out and replaced with “America.”
According to US media reports, the suggestion originated as an internet hoax before being amplified by the President.
Trump’s latest proposal comes amid a series of controversial suggestions to rename prominent geographical locations.
Last week, he suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz as the “Trump Strait” amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran, although he later appeared to indicate that he was not serious about the proposal.
In 2025, shortly after returning to the White House, Trump also ordered the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed the “Gulf of America,” a move that was rejected by Mexico.
