US President Donald Trump has sent Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Russia and Ukraine with a new peace proposal.
The diplomatic mission aims to revive efforts to end the war, which started when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Witkoff and Kushner arrived in Moscow on Saturday, September 5, 2026.
They held more than three hours of talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin.
Putin’s foreign policy adviser, Yuri Ushakov, described the discussions as frank and useful.
However, neither side announced a breakthrough.
The White House has not revealed the details of the proposal.
Trump previously said the two envoys were travelling with an idea for ending the war. He did not say whether the plan would require Ukraine to give up territory.
Witkoff and Kushner are expected to travel to Kyiv to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
It will be their first visit to Ukraine during Trump’s latest attempt to negotiate an agreement.
Russia wants Ukraine to surrender territory that Moscow claims as its own. It also wants Kyiv to abandon its ambition to join NATO.
Ukraine has rejected any agreement that would force it to give up its territory.
The diplomatic effort comes as Russia and Ukraine continue launching missiles and drones at each other.
A Russian drone recently hit the headquarters of Ukraine’s SBU security service in Kyiv.
Zelensky proposed a temporary pause in airstrikes while the American envoys travel between Moscow and Kyiv.
Russia later announced a temporary pause in attacks on Kyiv during the diplomatic mission.
The two countries remain far apart on several issues, and no date has been announced for direct talks between Putin and Zelensky.
